HN vs. Blockchain

Put simply, HN is not a blockchain solution.

Blockchain was initially developed to achieve a single purpose : the decentralized, immutable record-keeping of ownership and transactions, replacing the need for notaries and contractual middlemen such as banks.

HN was developed as a distributed ledger technology (DLT)-based system for the secure storage and processing of critical enterprise data, delivering more than the current functionalities available with blockchain.

Blockchain technology (proved most notably with Bitcoin) has an inherent need for a consensus protocol (though some DAG-based systems have implemented alternative methods) to prevent users from making simultaneous identical transactions and to prevent corruptions of blockchain’s decentralized immutability—which is key to its purpose.

HN has a different purpose—and a different approach to achieving it.

HN’s purpose is providing the scalable capacity to store, secure, and process massive amounts of data (petabytes and beyond), while making this data highly available, responsive, and queryable—all stored within the same highly secure, horizontal framework.

Using the automatic 5X replication of all data, HN ensures the security, integrity, and availability of data—not its immutability. For example, if the owner of a dataset stored on HN deletes this dataset, all replications of the data will be deleted from all the HN storage devices they were stored on. The data will only be maintained temporarily for recovery purposes (in the case of data deletion errors or incorrect data inputs), but it will will not be maintained permanently via immutable records held on multiple devices, as with blockchain.

Before replication, HN splits all data into encrypted micro-partitions, so the computing power the system needs to deliver its optimal results requires far less energy than current on-premises, datacenter, or cloud solutions.

This means HN is also a more environmentally friendly approach to IT, coming much closer to carbon neutral than any existing data storage or data processing solution.

In summary, HN and blockchain are different but compatible subsets of DLT. When developed in tandem by future innovators, the two technologies could be used to create a variety of useful solutions. But they are nonetheless distinctly different technologies, and they each serve a different purpose.

For the immutable record-keeping of ownership and transactions (contracts, certifications, financial transactions, digital artwork, NFTs, etc.), blockchain technology is an impressive solution with a promising future.

Speed:

Even early in its launch period HN is already capable of scaling its bandwidth up to 10 terabytes per second. The system can provide dynamic bandwidth to end users, boosting its bandwidth to address peak periods of use, and then lowering it when it's no longer needed.

Security:

HN uses military-grade file encryption, issuing individual keys for each data package that is distributed over the system's ledgers. These keys are stored by and only accessible to the system. Even if a ledger is compromised and hackers manage to acquire a package's key, they still need to find the rest of the related packages and their corresponding keys—and that's just for one file. Beyond the system's encryption, these security protocols make any hacking attempts futile.

Redundancy:

HN solves the main problems companies have with system replication, including backups, failovers, disaster recovery, data warehousing, and legacy storage. When a file is distributed to the system, it is split up into packages and replicated across five different ledgers. If a ledger becomes unavailable for more than a few seconds, the data is automatically replicated to another ledger for the best possible uptime and accessibility. The ledger out of the five with the best uptime and available speed gets assigned as the data's primary source.

Downsizing:

HN can cut corporate costs by eliminating the various expenses associated with vulnerabilities, hardware upkeep, software licenses, DNS routers, firewalls, Web servers, VPNs, and application servers, to name only a few.

In this way, we also eliminate many headaches. You can create and maintain your own business without having any significant IT knowledge or needing to hire someone to handle complex tasks such as business logic, firewalls, security, encryption, and database management.

Costs:

HN's costs are very straightforward. We bill users only for bandwidth and storage used. For bandwidth, the system charges €0,35 per GB. For its lowest tier storage (low priority, queryable, and always available for up to 10K transactions per day), it charges €0,85 per GB per month. Higher storage tiers for higher availability are charged up to a maximum of €6,90 per GB per month.

Each month, the system sends users a simple invoice, detailing the month's charges and the amount of storage and bandwidth used.

Privacy:

HN takes privacy very seriously, as we consider it a basic human right. All communication and databases within the system are highly protected and accessible to only the owner and authorized users. HN does not allow the implementation of accounts with different file authorization levels or any other form of backdoors, including global active directories and falsified admin rights. Unless authorized, no one but you can see or control your data.

Transparency:

We at HN believe transparency plays a major role in corporate trust and growth, as it affects people at all levels of an organization. This is why HN is transparent about the various aspects of its operations: performance, revenue, internal processes, sourcing, pricing, and business values, as well as oversight when it comes to who has been given access to what data.

Integration:

HN provides the ability to link different applications running database systems to HN through its API. Once an application is configured and properly set up, HN can communicate with it and perform any type of data operation.

Repurposing:

Have any hardware left after your migration? Or maybe an old laptop or desktop sitting around? Don't throw them away just yet. Get the most out of your hardware until the end of its life with HN. If it can run Windows or Linux with a basic firewall, you are all good to go.
